Black Lives Matter Series (4), fabric wrapped canvases, acrylic, transfers, hand embroidery, electrical tape, found mirror, wire, screws, wood, nails, tags, Nan Genger, MA, BFA

A transfer on fabric depicts the c.1801 diagram of the ‘Brookes’ ship transporting enslaved people, which was first used by the British abolition movement to abolish slavery. Numbers tape relates to the European trans-Atlantic slave trade, with a transfer of a sepia photograph of Southern enslaved people in front of their quarters. One canvas speaks to the current death toll of black transpeople with names and dates on each tag. The fourth canvas with the ‘whites only’ sign below a mirror, references the racist Jim Crow laws.
