Sashiko "Ganzezashi" Sea Urchin, monoprint, hand embroidery, Nan E. Genger, MA, BFA
When I was experiencing deep trauma healing, art became an expressive friend. I sought methods of embroidery with messages of community and connection with nature. With reverence, the Sashiko Series was carefully practiced and completed with many breaths of grieving and inner mending. Sashiko in Japanese translates as "little stabs." In remote farming/fishing villages, ragged textiles were mended with these small stitches. Stitching patterns reference particular animals, plants and objects, and their kami (spirit power) is transferred to the garment as it is sewn. Thus, the garment is imbued with a kami for the benefit of the wearer.
